The whole pregnancy was riddled with doubt. Would the baby go full term?<\/p>\n<p>I felt that the first words I said to my offspring\u2014if there was an offspring\u2014should be special. I decided\u00a0I would sing a Judy Collins song.<\/p>\n<p>My daughter was born one October night at the first 1:30 am, just before they turned the clocks back. There were a few stares when the nurse\u00a0handed my baby to me\u00a0and I warbled my first words to her:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;<a title=\"&quot;Anyone Would Love You&quot; Lyrics\" href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Anyone-Would-Love-You-Version\/dp\/B00122EPO2\/ref=sr_1_cc_1?ie=UTF8&amp;qid=1296277184&amp;sr=1-1-catcorr\" target=\"_blank\">Anyone would love you<\/a>,<br \/>\nAnyone at all,<br \/>\nAnyone with any sense is bound to fall,<br \/>\nI&#8217;m sure that anyone whose heart is free,<br \/>\nSeeing you would say,<br \/>\n&#8216;Here&#8217;s love, at last, here&#8217;s every lonely dream come true,&#8217;<br \/>\nOh anyone, believe me, would love you.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>My debut\u00a0was meant to\u00a0be my\u00a0last public performance.<\/p>\n<p>Twelve years later, my daughter had scoliosis surgery. It involved\u00a0deflating one lung, spreading her ribs, inserting screws into her spine, seeding the vertebrae with cadaver chips, and\u00a0joining it all with a\u00a0 \u00a0titanium rod. When it was over,\u00a0she needed a morphine drip for the pain. At one point, her IV needle fell out and needed to be reinserted.<\/p>\n<p>A\u00a0pediatric surgeon was called in, since no one else could find a vein. My daughter squirmed in agony, waiting for her much needed pain-dulling meds. The surgeon&#8217;s first three attempts failed.\u00a0The doctor moved to another location and\u00a0\u00a0my daughter cried out, &#8220;Will someone sing?&#8221; Music had always been a source of solace for her.<\/p>\n<p>Finally, I could be something\u00a0besides a useless bystander. I&#8217;m not sure if the rest of the pediatric ICU appreciated it, but I sang.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;Anyone would love you.. anyone at all&#8230;&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>A vein was a found. Sleep followed. The healing began. Thank you, Judy Collins, for that beautiful song. It&#8217;s been with me for the most important moments of my life. Don&#8217;t worry though, I won&#8217;t be competing with you\u00a0for concert venues.
